2018 | New Years Resolutions

Thanks for the shot Vienna

Thanks for the shot Vienna

My new year's resolutions rarely come to fruition and I'm beginning to think it may correlate with my lack of documentation and therefore any accountability for them in the past. In light of this realisation I'm going to share a few of my resolutions here and write the rest down in my private journal.

1. Finish At Least 5 Books By The End Of The Year

I'm a repeat offender.. opening a book and letting life get in the way. Reading off-screen is one of my favourite things to do yet I rarely make time for it, allowing scores of mind numbing consumerism to cross my eyes more frequently. That is going to change this year and I already have a few titles atop my list:

  1. Dark Places Gillian Flynn
  2. The Happiness Project Gretchen Rubin
  3. Wonder R.J. Palacio
  4. Maybe It's You Lauren Handel Zander

2. Consume Mindfully: Spend Less, Take Less, Own Less

In an attempt to save money, save space and help save the environment I will be wishlist-ing items I have my eye on rather than purchasing them instantaneously. I will try to find new homes for the possessions that no longer serve me and purchase more second hand, despite the lack of convenience I have become ever so reliant on and entitled to.

3. Switch Off Regularly

My iPhone has become an extension of my hand, like a fifth finger always ready and waiting to check my email, check that text, check my likes, what that word means, what time it is... it has become a part of the way my brain works; now having infinite information at my fingertips isn't always a bad thing but there needs to be a cut-off when certain tasks/ people/ situations require your full attention. It needs to become a tool again rather than a part of who I am. So this year I am going to have designated off-line times - to get things done in my work or give certain moments and experiences my full attention.

4. Gratitude Journaling & Habit Tracking

In the past I've used gratitude as a way to manage feelings of anxiety or focused on it while doing yoga from time to time but this year it's becoming tangible with beginning of a gratitude journal. As for habit tracking, what better way to stay accountable for all my new year's resolutions and the miscellaneous goals I have set for myself in 2018 than by mapping out the habits I'm committed to and checking them off each day or week.

As usual, I'd love to hear your thoughts on these resolutions or what other resolutions you have set for yourself this year!
